Metzora and the Path to Inclusive Community
It’s Shabbat Hagadol, The Great Shabbat, aka the Shabbat before Passover. I’m giving a talk tonight at a Reconstructionist synagogue in PA, and I’m sharing with you all a draft of my opening words, which discuss this week’s Torah portion.
This week, we delve into Parashat Metzora, a portion that often challenges contemporary readers with its detailed rituals for purification and its treatment of tzara'at, a condition traditionally translated as leprosy but understood by modern scholars as a form of spiritual malaise manifesting physically. The portion discusses the isolation and reintegration of those afflicted with tzara'at, reflecting on themes of community, separation, and the path back to communal harmony.
In Metzora, we see a powerful metaphor for the societal ills of exclusion and the processes necessary for healing and reintegration. Just as the Metzora undergoes purification to rejoin the community, we, too, are called upon to identify and cleanse the afflictions of prejudice and injustice in our communities. This purification is not just for the individual but involves the community's active participation in the healing process.
In our commitment to racial diversity, equity, and inclusion, we recognize that, like the Metzora, our society carries marks of past exclusions and ongoing disparities that require communal recognition and action. The process outlined in Metzora can inspire us to take deliberate steps toward healing, emphasizing that returning to a state of wholeness is both a personal and a communal journey. We strive to create spaces where everyone, regardless of their background, can feel seen, heard, and valued—fully reintegrated into the fabric of community life.
As we reflect on Metzora, let us consider how we, as a community, can act to identify, address, and heal the wounds of racial injustice. May our discussion tonight inspire us to action and commitment, mirroring the Torah's call for renewal and reintegration.
