Counting Every Soul, Embracing Every Identity: Naso's Relevance in Pride
Happy Pride Month
We find ourselves at the intersection of the reading of the Torah portion Naso and the beginning of Pride Month. At first glance, these may seem unrelated, but upon closer examination, we discover remarkable parallels that can inspire us to deepen our understanding of inclusivity, diversity, and acceptance.
Naso, derived from the Hebrew word for "lift up," begins with a census of the Israelites. In counting each person, regardless of their gender, race, or background, the Torah affirms every individual's intrinsic value and worth. It is a powerful reminder that within our diverse community, every person is created in the image of God, and their presence is essential.
During Pride Month, we honor and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. It is a time to acknowledge and embrace the beautiful tapestry of identities and orientations that exist among us. Just as Naso emphasizes the importance of counting each individual, Pride Month reminds us to lift up and affirm the experiences, struggles, and triumphs of LGBTQ+ individuals, honoring the diverse expressions of human love and identity.
But let us acknowledge that the path to acceptance is not always smooth. Bigots, driven by their own prejudices and a need for power, often recycle bigotry, using it as a tool to gain political points or perpetuate discrimination. I've watched this return time and time again, it's not new, and we must continue to fight against it and protect marginalized people. It is disheartening to witness the persistence of such attitudes, but it is precisely in moments like these that the messages of Torah and the beginning of Pride Month become even more vital.
Naso teaches us to challenge prejudice and overcome bias. It calls for us to reject discrimination in all its forms and treat everyone with fairness and respect. Pride Month invites us to stand against bigotry, hate speech, and discriminatory policies. It calls for us to extend love, understanding, and support to the LGBTQ+ community, creating a world where everyone can live authentically and without fear.
We are reminded of the Priestly Blessing found within Naso, which implores us to spread love, peace, and harmony. In the spirit of Pride Month, let us embrace this blessing and extend it to our LGBTQ+ siblings, particularly our Transgender siblings, affirming their inherent worth and dignity. As we recite these words, let us remember that love knows no boundaries, and our commitment to justice demands that we work tirelessly to create a world where all are seen, heard, and cherished.
In the coming days and weeks, let us take action. Let us study Torah and engage in dialogue about its themes of inclusion and equality, find solace and guidance in the Torah's call for justice and compassion. The Torah urges us to challenge the entrenched biases and discriminatory systems that perpetuate harm. Let us attend Pride events, showing our support and solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. Let us volunteer our time and donate to organizations working tirelessly for LGBTQ+ rights. And let us speak out against discrimination and hate speech, amplifying the voices that have been marginalized for far too long.
Pride Month serves as a reminder that the fight for equality and acceptance is ongoing. It highlights the struggles faced by my community the LGBTQ+ community, who, in the face of prejudice and discrimination, we continue to courageously assert our identities and demand recognition and equal rights. Pride Month stands as a beacon of hope, a call to action for all individuals and communities to reject bigotry and embrace diversity.
In moments when bigots seek to use their prejudice for personal or political gain, the messages of Jewish teaching become beacons of light in the darkness. Judaism reminds us of our duty to challenge and dismantle discriminatory systems, elevate the marginalized's voices, and work towards a more inclusive society.
As we enter into Pride month, we have the opportunity to create a world that reflects the sacred teachings of our tradition—a world where every person is counted, where prejudice is dismantled, and where love, acceptance, and understanding prevail. May our celebration of Pride Month inspire us to build a community that truly embraces the diversity within and around us.
Shabbat Shalom and Happy Pride Month to all.
The whole entire world is a very narrow bridge, yet I will not be afraid. I will stride with courage, undeterred by the unknown that lies ahead. In the face of adversity, I'll keep my spirit strong and unswayed. With each step I take, resilience and hope will be my loyal aides. Though the path may seem daunting, I'll walk with determination and grace; embracing life's challenges, I'll find strength in every single place. For this world, though vast and vast, is an opportunity to grow and thrive, And with unwavering faith, I'll conquer any fear and truly come alive. So, I'll traverse this bridge with a heart filled with unwavering belief, Knowing that within me lies the power to overcome. I'll face the uncertainties, unafraid of what lies on the other side, For with courage as my companion, I'll conquer the world far and wide.
