White House and the Vice President’s Mansion: A Rabbi's Unexpected Journey
I never imagined I would be among the privileged invited to the House of the Vice President and the White House, especially on multiple occasions. These visits to locations steeped in history have been beyond my wildest dreams. Surrounded by friends, esteemed colleagues, and other leaders in the Jewish community, I've felt a profound sense of community and belonging.
A memorable moment was when Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt tapped me on my shoulder and sought my advice. This gesture not only acknowledged my role as a Jewish leader but also affirmed that others recognize me as a guiding figure in the community. As a Black rabbi, being among the esteemed guests at locations constructed by my enslaved ancestors is profoundly symbolic. The presence of our Vice President, a Black-Indian woman, and her husband, the Second Gentleman, a Jewish man, at these events adds to this sense of ancestral pride. It feels as though my forebears are watching over these moments with joy and satisfaction. Attending these events has filled me with gratitude and affirmed the recognition of my hard work and dedication. In these important halls, I embrace my role as a representative of the American Jewish community, a leader in Reconstructing Judaism and the rich diversity of our people.
These opportunities have endowed me with a unique perspective, strengthening my dedication to fostering meaningful change within the Jewish community and beyond. As a national religious leader, I am resolved to utilize my voice and presence to positively influence our national conversation about religion, acknowledging the diverse voices and perspectives that make up the United States.
Looking ahead into the coming year, I'm filled with renewed purpose. 'Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life because you become what you believe,' words from Oprah Winfrey resonate with me. May we all embrace new opportunities with open hearts and strive to leave a lasting impact, embodying the visions we hold for ourselves.

Some Torah: Miketz – A Personal and Universal Journey of Resilience
As we delve into the Torah portion of Miketz, it strikes a profound chord. Miketz is not just a story from our past; it's a living narrative that resonates deeply with anyone who has faced adversity and emerged with strength and purpose.
My Journey Echoing Joseph's Path
In Miketz, we observe Joseph's remarkable transformation, evolving from a prisoner into a formidable leader in Mitzrayim (Egypt). Reflecting on this, I see a powerful parallel in my own journey and the journey of others who have faced adversity.
I see myself in the transformative Joseph story, my story marked by navigating through the barriers of racism and its influence on my career opportunities. Today, I am a prominent Jewish leader in the United States.
As a Black rabbi, my presence in the halls of power, which my enslaved ancestors built, is both a poignant reminder and a symbol of a remarkable transition. It represents a historical arc bending from the pain and struggle of enslavement to a present where I stand as an invited guest and a respected Jewish leader. This evolution, mirroring Joseph's path, highlights not just the resilience required to surmount formidable barriers but also the vital importance of holding onto faith and hope amidst the most daunting challenges.
Joseph's resilience in the face of adversity is a powerful lesson for all. His ability to remain steadfast and use his gifts wisely, even in difficult times, is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. This resilience is a universal theme, resonating with anyone who has faced challenges and used them as stepping stones to greater heights.
The Recognition of Leadership
The recognition of leadership, as exemplified when Joseph is acknowledged by Pharaoh, mirrors moments in my own life. When leaders like Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt seek my advice, or when I am invited to the White House and the Vice President's mansion, it echoes the validation Joseph received. These moments are powerful reminders that our contributions and insights are valuable and recognized.
The Symbolism of Diverse Leadership in Our Times
In our current landscape, the representation of diverse American leaders, such as our Vice President and the Second Gentleman, mirrors the diversity and inclusivity we aspire to achieve in our communities. Their roles as prominent figures in our nation, coupled with my presence as a witness and participant, underscore the critical importance of embracing a multitude of voices and perspectives. This is akin to how Joseph's unique insights were indispensable in ancient Egypt.
A Vision for the Future
As we reflect on Miketz, let us draw inspiration from Joseph's story and apply its lessons to our own lives. Let's embrace the resilience to overcome our challenges and recognize the potential for leadership within each of us. And as Oprah Winfrey wisely said, "Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life, because you become what you believe." May we all hold onto our visions and continue to make impactful contributions to our communities and beyond.
May this Shabbat inspire us to embrace our journeys with resilience and to recognize the leadership potential within ourselves and others.
This brings us to a pivotal moment in our journey. The experiences and insights gained are not just for reflection, but for action. It's about understanding our individual roles in shaping not only our community but also our personal paths. The decisions we make, the dialogues we engage in, and the leadership roles we assume will shape our journey ahead.
I invite you to:
Share Your Story of Resilience: Your personal experiences of overcoming adversity and leading with intention can inspire others. Mentor, teach, or engage in discussions that empower others to recognize their potential.
Reflect and Grow: I encourage you to reflect on your personal journey. Consider how you have shown resilience and how you can use your unique experiences to inspire and guide others.
Seize New Opportunities: As we move forward, let us embrace new challenges with open hearts, actualizing the visions we hold for our lives and for those around us.
Your Voice, Your Impact
Remember, each unique voice and story contributes to the tapestry of resilience and leadership. As Oprah Winfrey says, "Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life, because you become what you believe." Let this be your guiding principle as you strive to create a path that honors resilience, embraces diversity, and nurtures leadership.
