This week we read the Torah portion Vayeshev and learn the story of Joseph, who is sold into slavery by his brothers. He later rises to a position of power in Egypt. As we read this narrative, we might be struck by the twists and turns of Joseph's journey and how his story seems to be guided by a higher power.
I am a Reconstructionist rabbi, and I see this story as a reminder of the importance of resilience and adaptability in the face of challenge. Joseph is able to thrive despite the many hardships he faces, and his ability to adapt and make the most of his circumstances ultimately leads to his success.
Joseph's dreams and his interpretation of those dreams are a key part of his journey, and they connect him to his ancestors and the larger story of the Jewish people. As a reconstructionist, I recognize the value of tradition and how it can enrich and nourish our lives. I also understand that tradition is not static and must be reimagined and reinterpreted in light of contemporary realities.
In this way, the story of Joseph reminds us of the importance of tradition and adaptability in our lives. May we find the resilience and adaptability to thrive in the face of challenges and find meaning and connection through our traditions as we navigate the twists and turns of our journeys.

Thank you Rabbi! I think this Torah message has been especially applicable the last 2+ years and we will continue to be challenged more dramatically then in the past. People in all stages of life will be challenged differently. As a Senior I’m feeling really challenged in many ways, YET I am happy in the most meaningful ways... there is so much love and appreciation in my life! Shabbat Shalom!
