Our continuous Torah cycle enables us to find new meanings and relevance in the ancient texts, reflecting on our current experiences.
A few weeks ago, we began reading from the book of Bamidbar, aka Numbers. This week's Torah portion, Pinchas, introduces us to the daughters of Zelophechad: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. These five sisters, living in a patriarchal society where laws favored men, boldly approached Moses to claim their right to inherit their father's land. Their courage in stepping forward and advocating for themselves led to a groundbreaking change in inheritance laws, as God instructed Moses to grant them their rightful inheritance and to extend this law to all of the people.
This historical example echoes in our own time, as we witness excitement surrounding Kamala Harris's historic candidacy. Since then, Harris continues to face attacks on her race, gender, and ethnicity despite her incredible competence, qualifications, and commitment to public service. Harris is a modern testament to the power of resilience and the importance of standing up for one's values despite the barriers and attacks.
The story of the daughters of Zelophechad reminds us that progress often requires boldness and the willingness to challenge the status quo. Their actions changed the course of history, just as Harris' candidacy symbolizes a significant step toward greater equality and representation.
We draw strength from the legacy of these courageous women in our tradition. Their boldness in seeking justice should inspire all of us to continue advocating for change and standing up for what is right. In honoring their legacy, we celebrate the progress made and remain committed to the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice for all.
May we find joy and courage in this historic moment of progress. Celebrating the resilience and strength of Black women who continue to inspire us. May we honor their legacy by standing up for justice, paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future. And may we always hold onto hope and resilience, paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.
