Thank you for making us aware of this. Maybe we all should take a very close, very critical look at stuff Heritage Foundation cooks up. So far, what I have seen is Anti Democratic and hateful.
This has been so informative. One of the things I have consistently seen in this current regime is the inability to recognize paradox and nuance. The assertion that other people need protecting and we will do that is seen with women and Jewish/Israeli people. But there seems to be a common thread of money and power behind all of this. Those of us who are not wealthy are weak and unable to care for ourselves, so they will make the rules. The long history of abuse against the Jews is so consistent and oppressive. But it has made Jewish people stronger and more sure of the way they want to live. Perhaps the "rulers" will be surprised at the strength of the people they are trying to control.
Antisemitism on the left isn’t just about Israel. Marx was an antisemite. He said the Jewish religion was money. No, Marx wasn’t Jewish. His parents converted and was raised as a Lutheran. Have you read Anti-Judaism: The Western Tradition? I recommend it highly.
With two progressive Jewish kids on campus, and having done consulting work advocating for Jewish student well-being at three campus hot spots (including Barnard/Columbia), I'd suggest yes, Project Esther is deeply flawed, but hardly the top concern in this fraught moment for Jews. The heavy-handed deportation/funding threats aren't helpful, no matter how noxious activists like Khalil may be. Students on campus have already expressed concern this effort will increase the animus they already face. Jews need a more unified voice, and the poignant letter signed by over 600 Barnard/Columbia students that called our JVP (kicked off that campus for harassing Jews) for that group's false flag use of Jewish identity to help inflame anti-Zionist animated hate rhetoric is worth a reread. Project Esther is unlikely to be embraced by any campus community; the half-baked mendacity of JVP (and their partner group SJP) conversely have too often muddled very authentic Jewish concerns about campus anti-semitism. We need to focus on the real causes of this cameos mess.
I guess you are writing in the American context. Worldwide, there are leftists who are militant secularists (look at laicism movement in France and Quebec). These secularists hate Jews simply for being religious.
I agree with you that there is anti-semitism on the left and on the right and that both need to be addressed. In Canada, antisemitism on the right is mostly under the surface, whereas Jews are suffering daily from antisemitism on the left. Perhaps this is not true in the USA where you have elected a fascist government twice in a decade.
MAGA weaponized Christianity, now they are weaponizing Judaism. Everything is a tool and an object to them. They want power and will exert it with no consideration as to your identity. When they don't think they need you anymore, watch out.
